Aim and Objectives To provide reading and recreational facilities for afflicted people of the earthquake;
After working for nearly a month, the Community Reading Room at An County, Sichuan was completed on 20 August, and was opened officially by the end of September.

Report

The basic facilities of the Reading Room includes printed books, electronic books, library catalogue, information, burglarproof devices, computers, desks and chairs, bookshelves, etc.

Regarding the book collection, we have bought 7,000 printed books as planned. Together with the 610 free copies given to us by the book dealer, we got a total of 7,610 printed books. All the books are certified copies by the authority. We bought the library management system also and had arranged professionals to conduct training on book cataloguing, classification, shelving and management for staff of the Reading Room. We have prepared a catalogue for all the books, registered the books, fixed a magnetic strip in every book and installed an alarm system at the exit of the Reading Room. All these will ensure good maintenance, avoid losses of books and facilitate long-term use of the Reading Room.

We have created a Local Area Network (LAN), through which a number of PCs are connected to a main computer to access the electronic books. It saves the cost of buying a server and solves the issue of sharing of as much as 36,000 electronic books. The electronic books cover many areas, that compliment and enrich our book varieties and saves much for buying printed books.

The purpose for GFF to setting up a community Reading Room in An County is to improve the quality of life of local residence. With the Reading Room being set up, people can have a place to read and stay after work. By encouraging reading, people can gain more knowledge and information, enriching their life. GFF also provides organic and biodynamic farming technique books and materials to help local farming industry to improve their crops.

Green Field Foundation Limited (GFF)
Aim and Objectives
  • To organize summer activities for students of Youxian Secondary School. The school is going to have a long summer holiday since most teachers and staff have to prepare for the construction and opening of its new school.
  • To allow local students and young people understand the livelihood of students affected by last year’s earthquake. It is the last chance to experience teaching in a settlement school.

Report

Leading by Dr Graham Lock, the English Summer Camp for students of Youxian Secondary School at Mianyang City has been successfully executed. Youxian Secondary and Primary School had been destroyed during last year’s earthquake. The students are studying in a temporary structure 1 mile away from the original school site. The summer camp was held in the temporary site.

This year’s program was designed for junior secondary students. We had four professional teachers, volunteers from the sponsor, and some young volunteers. It was a big group of over 20 volunteers. However, the local response was unexpectedly high and we had to handle bigger classes than we had planned. It was hard work for our volunteers. Yet our hard work had been rewarded by the significant progresses of the students during the week. They are so eager to learn and their performances deeply impressed their teachers and our volunteers.

This event also provided a valuable experience for the volunteers, especially the younger ones. They have become the idols of local students and built up valuable friendship with them. The teachers and students of local area had been through such a tragic event, yet they were so content with what they had and living every moment wholeheartedly and happily. Living in Hong Kong, we should be grateful of what we have and learn from the people of the afflicted areas on how to face adversity and survive.
