Planning of the Eco-Campus

1. Objective

Primary objective is to serve the students.

2. Principle

To conduct planning according to the requirements for eco-campus and the pattern for ecosystem as per GFF proposal.

3.Current Situation
Number of Students:

Current year, there are 334 students and is expected to be around 300 for the next 3 years.

Existing Facilities:

2 Academic Buildings, 1 Office Building, 1 Student Quarter, 1 Student Canteen, 1 Playground, 1 Basket Ball Court, 1 Teachers’ Quarter, 1 Traditional Toilet, 4 Pig Houses, 2 Acres of Vegetable Farm, 6 Acres of Forest, and 4.7 Acres of Tea Farm.
Local Weather:
Ximeng County has abundant resource of solar energy. The climate is good for agriculture with highest temperature at around 32oC, lowest 8oC and an average of 25oC.

The annual rainfall amount in Ximeng is about 2500mm but the distribution is not even. The rainy season is from May to September and other than these months, rainfall is minimal. The longest record without rain is more than 1 month. Not many institutions has water tank due to the high building cost. The soil in Ximeng is not good in capturing water, therefore, there are rain and drought problems in the County.

4. Design

Eco-campus is a simple system depending on a balanced amount of production and consumption individuals. In order to build a more diverse system which will has more functions, we should:
- Expand the producer group (improve the vegetable farm and banana area);
- Introduce more consumer group (add chicken, pig); and
- Introduce the decomposer group (add earthworm, microorganism).

4.1 Water

The school has 2 sources of water supply and should be adequate for agriculture and pig farming if use with care. But the drainage and irrigation system is not well constructed and water always congregate in the playground during rainy season. Works need to be done in the drainage and irrigation system.

4.2 Garbage Handling Centre

The garbage produced by the kitchen is indeed quality material for compost. The garbage produced by students are mainly paper and plastics, which will be a source of income for poverty stricken children who may collect and sell the garbage to waste collection center. Therefore it is recommended to build a 2mx3m hut for collecting recyclable garbage and a 2mx4m hut next to the kitchen to treat the garbage produced from the kitchen.

4.3 Compost Toilet

To protect the environment and sustain the ecosystem, an odourless compost lavatory should be built next to the vegetable field and student quarter for convenience of use and waste collection.

4.4 Animal Farm

At present, the animal farm is next to the kitchen and canteen of teacher. It is recommended to move the animal farm next to the vegetable farm for easy eco-system management.

4.5 Waste Water Collection

To meet the actual needs, a waste water collection and re-utilisation system may solve partly the lack of water in dry season and ease the demand for rain water containers.

4.6 Others

In order to build a healthy environment, indoor stadium and other sporting facilities, canteen, lavatory and bathroom must be included.
